Laurel District Real Estate
The Laurel District is considered to be the area surrounding 35th Avenue and Macarthur Boulevard. Laurel is an area that went through major expansion during WWII. Housing needs during wartime increased, and therefore the Laurel district expanded. What was formerly Hopkins Street was renamed Macarthur Boulevard in honor of WWII hero Douglas Macarthur. Business in the area was spurred by the opening of the 38th Avenue streetcar line, and by the 1920's there were hardware stores, drug stores, restaurants and other businesses established. The architecture of Laurel consists mostly of Crafstman Bungalow and Mediterranean homes, some with large lots.
Along Macarthur Boulevard fom High street all the Way to Fruitvale Avenue is the Commercial section of Laurel. Bank of America, World Grounds Cafe, Full House Cafe, Macarthur Chicken and Poultry, Everett and Jones BBQ and The Food Mill are just a sampling of the businesses located in the Laurel District. The Laurel Festival is a yearly event that celebrates the people and businesses in the Laurel and Oakland in general. The last event was held on one of the most beautiful weekends we had this past summer, and it drew a great crowd who enjoyed food and beverages from the local businesses as well as perfomances by local artists.
